WWI Pocket Shrines

WWI Pocket Shrines

Pocket Shrines or as some call it Pocket Saints were extremely small figures from Christian/Catholic history. Usually measuring about an inch high and kept in protective metal cases, these were carried by troops for personal devotions or prayer. These were especially popular on the frontlines where services may have been hard to attend. They could be any religion but the most common in the military would be that of Christian or Catholic saints. The one featured to the right is of Saint Joseph the man who married Saint Mary.
