New Testaments in World War One

Upon recognizing the importance of religion to many servicemembers, many churches, organizations, and even the Red Cross and YMCA issued pocket-sized New Testaments to troops. Personal information was often added by the servicemember in the front of the New Testament.

A Christmas Gift

This New Testament was given to Delos Rouse by his Sunday School teacher Katharyn Peters on Christmas Day, 1915 in Wellsboro, PA. When war broke out a few years later, the boy donated the book to the Red Cross, who issued it to a soldier with other hygiene items. The Testament is un-dated but has a patent date on the back of 1910. The note was found inside the Testament.
