A curry comb is a tool used to clean a horse of dirt, old hair, dead skin, and foreign debris from the horse’s hair. The shown model consists of five rows of serrated blades, with a sixth blunt blade in the middle to prevent the other blades from sinking too deep into the horse’s skin. It is on an iron back with a handle on the reverse made of cotton duck. On the top of the curry comb is a hoof pick for cleaning out debris from the horse’s hoof.
The curry comb was used by placing it against the horse’s skin and brushing in a circular fashion. This also caused the skin to secrete oil which helped keep the horse’s hair healthy. The curry comb was an essential part of a cavalry trooper’s gear.
