The Model 1902 Cotton Uniform

After the Spanish-American War, the U.S. Army decided to update their uniforms so they would be more standard across all branches. Thus, the Model 1902 uniforms were introduced; one in blue wool for dress and a cotton khaki version for the field.

The cotton uniform is khaki in color and features a five button front with two breast and two lower pockets that are bellowed and pointed cuffs. All buttons are rimless brass eagle buttons. The collar is a stand-and-fall type and jacket has epaulettes as well. The jacket, if warranted, would have the new 1902 style rank on each sleeve. Instead of pointing down, chevrons would point up and were usually the color of the branch the soldier was in (yellow for cavalry, red for artillery, etc.) The trousers matched the color of the jacket and are of the same material. They are baggy and straight-leg with an adjustment buckle on back and a button fly. They are meant to be worn with leggings.
