After the Spanish-American War, the U.S. Army decided to update their uniforms so they would be more standard across all branches. Thus, the Model 1902 uniforms were introduced; one in blue wool for dress and a cotton khaki version for the field.
The dress uniform’s visor cap matched the jacket in dark blue color and had two rows of wool around the hat in the color of the service branch (blue for infantry, yellow for cavalry, etc.) The shape of the hat was “pillbox” style with two grommeted vent holes on each side, a black leather chinstrap and black turned-down brim. The chinstrap buttons are rimless brass eagle buttons. To the front of the hat would be affixed the branch insignia.
