Initially developed for the cavalry as dismounted troops were still being issued the Model 1911 Rain Poncho. As the rain poncho supply got low, however, the raincoat eventually got issued to all AEF (American Expeditionary Forces) troops.
The raincoat is made of a rubberized cotton sheeting and has three hooks on front for closing. There is also a lower button that can be snapped to keep the coat from blowing open in high winds. It has two side pockets and a falling collar. There are eight vent holes in a circle on the inside of the raincoat that is covered on the outside by a flap.
