After the Civil War, the US Army began experimenting with and trialing many pieces of uniforms, field gear and equipment. One such piece was the mess tin boiler, patented May 5th, 1886. The shape is like a third of a pie with a tin handle protruding from the back of the boiler. The lid has a “QM” for Quartermaster showing that this was an issued piece. The patent date is stamped below it. The lid also has a wood knob for lifting.
