The 1907 Suspenders

The suspenders were originally introduced in 1903 to help offset the heavy load of a cartridge belt with accoutrements. The 1907 suspenders were an improvement on the 1903 suspenders by using two separate straps connected by a metal bracket on the back of the suspenders. The back end of the suspenders featured a single hook on the end of each strap connected by two metal rivets. The middle of the strap widened for more comfort on the shoulders, and tapers into the ends of the straps. The front part of the suspenders had a metal rectangular loop on the end of each strap through which a separate strap passed through. This strap also had a hook on each end attached by two metal rivets each and an adjusting buckle for adjusting the length of the suspenders. These hooks would attach to the cartridge or pistol belt by grommets located around the belts.

The suspenders were in use until the Model 1910 haversack was introduced. The haversack featured straps which acted as suspenders, attaching directly to the cartridge or pistol belt. The suspenders were used by BAR gunners for their belts as well, but ultimately the suspenders were phased out, replaced by the haversack.
