Grenades have been used in war since the 1700’s, and the need for a carrier for grenades was great in WWI as grenades became common among troops. The 1918 Grenade Bag was one way troops could carry a large amount of grenades to and from the front.
The bag is made of cotton and padded on both sides. It has a flap with three snap buttons and a cotton carrying strap that was worn around the body. Under the flap is usually where the maker and date appear. The bag is bellowed to allow for the expansion of the bag when filled with grenades.
The bag may have seen some overseas service but as most bags encountered are in un-issued condition, it may be possible that most of them never went overseas and were instead sold as surplus as they would make a great bag for hunting, fighing and other activities.
